Instead of conceaving absence as immaterialità and conceaving image as a copy of the existing tower I propose an ephemeral design that works with absence in multiples ways.

A numeric control machine will mould the material (polystyrene) and makes the absence present in two ways:

as pouder, residual of the molding that defines the volume,

as stereometry, void stored that defines the geometry (based on the existing tower).

The pouder obtained becomes the opportunity for the inhabitants of Antwerp to take possession and share the absence of the tower. Looking the tower from above it is possible to experience the vertigo generated by the absence.

This volume relates itself with the cathedral and resounds with the city:

because of its capacity of being a temporary landmark that differs from the historical city,

because of the possibility of moving it trough the canals of Antwerp as a symbolic exchange between ephemeral and built architecture.

The project could end with the double presence in the public space of the mold and the generated volume to compare the experience of the absence and its casted volume.

Absence is an interval of time during which something or somebody is away, withdrawn in mind. This definition brings the main idea of the project, which is to resemble the past in which the cathedrals were built in two towers as a representation of the physical and spiritual identity of men. For the proposal the old tower represents the physical experience and the new tower symbolizes the spiritual expression.

The concept is to represent the spiritual identity through the new tower, which is made out of an iron structure, holding in it center a water wall that embodies the communication between divine love and spirituality by the rays emitted by the sun or moon. These rays of light suggest the internal sense and the truth in which God is made the supreme internal sense. So combining the spiritual element with the concept of absence we understand that as the intervention of man present but not in a physical way.

Shadow is an evidence of physical presence. When we see the shadow of something we perceive its existence without actually seeing it! Using the shadow of the missing tower we can play with the idea of its presence.

This could be a first step to an actual construction, to trace the shadow of the tower on the buildings around it and on the street as a form of announcement or correspondence to the actual planned form.
The shadow outline could also be filled with information text and it could change place and wander around….

Incompleteness is what makes Antwerp s cathedral so particular and recognisable so dealing with the absence is what interests us.

Only something that existed or still exists somewhere else in real or mental space can be defined as absent. We are trying to evoke this possible presence by implementing the 'completed' shadow on the ground.

A shadow is a phenomena between real and virtual, a notion of both absence and presence.

The materialisation of our proposal is quite simple and therefore realistic – a graphism painted on the city squares, streets and perhaps even roofs and facades of the adjacent buildings.

People could recognise the moment when the real shadow matches a painted one as a new daily attraction.
